New York Guitar Competition Rules
Open to competitors of any age and of any nationality
All repertoire will be free choice
All competitors will be required to submit their completed applications, application fee of $50, and a recording of their preliminary round piece uploaded to YouTube by July 13th 11:59PM EDT.
Refunds will not be offered.
Preliminary round
All competitors’ first round videos must be submitted by 11:59PM EDT on July 13th. All videos will be judged by the incredible artists at the New York Guitar Seminar.
Preliminary Round will be streamed live on Wednesday July 15th at 11:00am EDT (3:00 PM UTC) on Facebook and Youtube. The results will be announced the same night.
Each candidate must:
Play one or more works on a classical guitar that total no more than five (5:00) minutes in length. If you go over the 5:00 limit, your video will be edited to end after 5 minutes of actual playing. Tuning and preparation before the beginning of the first piece of music are not included in the allotted time.
The video and audio must be unedited from the time the competitors play the first note of their first piece to the last note of their final piece.
The video may have been recorded at any time during the past year. Video used in another competition is acceptable.
The video must be uploaded to YouTube with the title “New York Guitar Competition 2020 - COMPETITOR’S NAME - NAME OF WORK - COMPOSER”
In the description of the video the competitor must put the name of their piece, and in the case of multiple pieces being played the time stamp for each piece.
Twelve (12) finalists will be chosen to advance to the next round
Final Round
By July 20th 11:59PM EDT, all finalists must submit a new video for the Final Round. This will be uploaded to Youtube and submitted via this page.
The final round will be livestreamed on July 21st at 4PM EDT. This will be open to viewers on Facebook and YouTube.
Each candidate will be required to play no more than ten (10) minutes of music. You may repeat music from the first round without penalty. If you exceed the 10:00 minute limit of playing time, your video will be edited to end after 10 minutes of actual playing. Tuning and preparation before the beginning of the first piece of music are not included in the allotted time.
The order of players will be determined randomly.
The judges will determine the 1 Grand Prize winner and 3 prizewinners as well as the special prizes. The winners will be announced as soon as the judges’ deliberations are completed.

Guitar Salon International Audience Prize
Winner will receive an Antonio Loriente “Clarita” guitar from GSI. The audience prize goes to the finalist who gets the most comments from different people on their video on the New York Guitar Seminar Instagram and Facebook pages.
Best Interpretation of a work by Leo Brouwer
Winner will receive a signed Audiophile Vinyl LP of the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo’s new recording of music by Leo Brouwer, “El Libro de los Seres Imaginarios,” including a signed postcard from Leo Brouwer.
*All donated prizes are subject to the delivery by the sponsor. NYGC will do everything possible to ensure delivery of all prizes, but NYGC will not be held responsible if the donor does not deliver a prize as listed above.
*The New York Guitar Competition reserves the right, and the Competitor agrees to allow, the New York Guitar Competition, to produce and distribute, without restriction or fee, all recordings of the entire Competition or parts thereof, including the application recording and all rounds of the Competition, including the Final round.
Competitors specifically agree for their name, portrait, picture, voice, and online audio and video participation to be recorded, and specifically agree to the broadcasting, televising, photographing, reproducing, transmitting, playing and showing of, the Competitor’s name, portrait, picture, voice, and audio and video recording, by any medium whatsoever, including, but not limited to, the internet, and on the New York Guitar Competition’s website and its various online social media accounts (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.).
The Competitor also agrees to make no claim whatsoever against the New York Guitar Competition, or its officers, employees, volunteers, agents and/or assigns, resulting from the use at any time of any name, portrait, picture, voice, and audio and video recorded performances of the Competitor in the Competition by the New York Guitar Competition.
